Poll Shows Over Half of Travelers Miss Travel Insurance Opportunity

A poll currently on CNN.com asks travelers if they have ever purchased travel insurance. Unfortunately, at the time of this posting, 52% of respondents indicated they had not. That means many travelers are likely getting stuck paying more than they need to when travel inconveniences occur.

The concept of travel insurance is simple. By paying a small fee to a travel insurance provider, your international travel investment will be protected financially. So if your flight is cancelled, or you miss a connection, or your luggage is lost, you can seek reimbursement from your insurance company.

Travel Plans Haulted By Volcano? Travel Insurance May Help

Millions of people worldwide are finding out what it means to be stuck. A volcano eruption in Iceland caused plumes of thick ash to limit visibility and ground airplanes. Some travelers found themselves stuck in airports and hotels, unable to get home, or forced to cancel their vacation plans. Turns out, travel insurance may have been a wise purchase.

Jim Grace, President of the US Travel Insurance Association told KOMO that most travel insurance policies cover cancellations due to medication, terrorism or when the travel company goes bankrupt. And you can also add volcanoes to that list.

If you bought trip insurance before the recent volcanic eruptions, your travel may be covered by the policy, depending on exclusions. But if you are hoping to get travel insurance to protect you from any volcano-related disruptions in the future, you are probably out of luck – Scott McCartney of the Wall Street Journal reports that as of April 13, there is no ash coverage anymore. It’s similar in principle as to why you can’t call your agent to buy a flood insurance policy in the middle of a hurricane. Insurance covers unexpected events, not events that are in progress.
